International Living Donor Liver Transplantation Congress Held in Shanghai for the First Time, with "Renji Model" Hailed as a Replicable Global Benchmark
The 7th Academic Congress of the International Living Donor Liver Transplantation Society and the 7th Oriental Organ Transplantation Congress were held in Shanghai in 2025, marking the first time that the Chinese mainland secured the right to host a high-level international organ transplantation congress. Xia Qiang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of Renji Hospital, served as congress chair, with more than 800 experts and scholars from 34 countries and regions in attendance. Since 2006, the Department of Liver Surgery at Renji Hospital, led by Xia Qiang, has dedicated itself to pediatric liver transplantation and has grown into the world's largest pediatric liver transplant center, with its annual case volume ranking first in the world for twelve consecutive years.
Among the 4,000 cases of pediatric living donor liver transplantation performed, the 10-year overall survival rate reached 92%. During the congress, the team live-streamed laparoscopic donor hepatectomy and pediatric living donor liver transplantation procedures, and jointly released the "Global Expert Consensus on Minimally Invasive Donor Hepatectomy Techniques" with the International Laparoscopic Liver Society, advancing China from a technology sharer to a co-builder of industry standards.
