Winning Overseas Fans: Chinese Approach to Ovarian Cancer Saves a Patient from Pakistan

Recently, a team led by Professor Wu Xiaohua at Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center successfully treated a late-stage ovarian cancer patient from Pakistan using its "Chinese approach" to ovarian cancer diagnosis and treatment. The 60-year-old patient, Ms. Meng, was diagnosed one year ago with a tumor exceeding 10 centimeters that had adhered tightly to multiple organs including the uterus, intestine, liver and bladder, with metastatic nodules throughout the abdominal and pelvic cavities and massive ascites.

Three rounds of neoadjuvant chemotherapy administered locally produced no tumor shrinkage, and she was judged to have almost no chance of curative surgery. After her admission, the hospital promptly assembled a multidisciplinary team spanning gynecologic oncology, liver surgery, colorectal surgery, anesthesiology and nuclear medicine for a joint consultation, tailoring a plan of "radical surgery plus adjuvant therapy plus full-course targeted management." Over five hours, the team completed multi-organ resection and complex adhesiolysis, achieving R0 resection while maximally preserving organ function. The medical staff also prepared bilingual Chinese-English nursing instructions, and the patient was discharged smoothly two weeks after surgery, with follow-up confirming a disease-free status.
