Professor Wu Xiaohua's Project Wins 2025 National Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Prize)
On July 8, 2026, the 2025 National Science and Technology Awards were announced. The project "Innovation and Dissemination of Organ Preservation and Functional Remodeling Technologies for Malignant Tumors of the Female Reproductive System," in which Professor Wu Xiaohua of the Department of Gynecology at Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center participated as the second completer, was awarded the National Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Prize). Advocating equal emphasis on gynecological cancer treatment and fertility preservation, the team over more than 20 years of research created an "one antagonist and three reductions" regimen for endometrial cancer reversal and preservation of endometrial function, and developed novel techniques for cervical cancer fertility sparing and cervical function preservation.
The "Fudan standard" for open cervical cancer fertility-sparing surgery established by Wu Xiaohua's team expanded the indication from the tumor diameter of 2 cm or less required by the traditional international Dargent standard to stage IB patients with tumors measuring 2 to 4 cm, raising the proportion of benefiting patients from 18% to 36%. The postoperative five-year recurrence-free survival and overall survival rates reached 96.3% and 98.6% respectively, and the pregnancy rate increased 2.3-fold. Since 2015, the standard has been cited and recommended by the NCCN cervical cancer clinical practice guidelines for 11 consecutive years.
