Consensus on Building Research-Oriented TCM Hospitals Released in Shanghai as a Century-Old Hospital Explores the Translation of Vast Clinical Data

As part of the events marking the 70th anniversary of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the 120th anniversary of Shuguang Hospital, the hospital held a conference on the construction and high-quality development of research-oriented TCM hospitals in Shanghai, where the Consensus on Building Research-Oriented TCM Hospitals was released. In 2007, Shuguang took the lead among TCM hospitals nationwide in setting the goal of building a research-oriented TCM hospital, following an innovation path in which "clinical practice poses the questions, research provides the answers, and results feed back into clinical care." Drawing on 20 years of practice, the consensus focuses on two-way empowerment between clinical care and research, differentiated cultivation of distinctive disciplines, and the implementation of results translation mechanisms, establishing an industry benchmark for the coordinated development of research-oriented TCM hospitals nationwide. The conference also presented interim achievements in building a data lakehouse that removes barriers to sharing multi-source, heterogeneous data within the hospital.

Keynote reports were delivered by Chen Kaixian, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Fan Xianqun, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Yan Shiyun, a master of Chinese medicine; and Shen Yuandong, chairman of ISO/TC 249.
