From 'A Glass of Water' to 'A Drop of Urine': Huadong Hospital Turns Kidney Science into a Journey

During the 8th Shanghai Municipal Hospital Public Health Science Communication Week and Hospital Open Day, Huadong Hospital held its 2026 public health science week and hospital open day events. Party Secretary Jin Jianping noted that 2026 marks the hospital's centennial and that, as a leading institution in geriatric medicine, it has cultivated party-building service brands including "loving meals for the elderly," the "hearing-assistance clinic" and the "medical and elderly care express." The second season of the immersive kidney and urinary health exhibition, "River of Life," was jointly presented by the nephrology and urology departments. Following the path "from a glass of water to a drop of urine," it recreates the entire process by which water enters the bloodstream, is filtered and reabsorbed by the kidneys, and is excreted as urine.

Conditions such as urinary tract stones, tumors and benign prostatic hyperplasia were turned into tangible scenes including "Stone Canyon" and "Tracing Hematuria," with a six-station check-in experience designed for visitors. The hospital has also built the "Huadong Health Talk" science communication brand and published an Illustrated Handbook of Home Care for the Elderly.
