Professor Lin Xiaoxi's Team at Shanghai Ninth Hospital: Solving Intractable Vascular Malformations with a "Chinese Approach"

Professor Lin Xiaoxi and his team at the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital have worked in the field of hemangioma and vascular malformation for three decades. On January 29, 2026, the team's breakthrough on the mechanism of facial infiltrating lipomatosis (FIL) was published online in Advanced Science, marking its 16th paper in the field of the PIK3CA-mutation-related overgrowth disease spectrum over the past three years. For extracranial arteriovenous malformation, the team launched China's first dedicated targeted drug clinical trial, which has been approved by the national drug regulatory authority.

Preliminary data show that many patients saw their lesions shrink by more than half after 16 weeks of medication, and the age range for the trial has been broadened from 18-65 to 12-70 years. Treating more than 36,000 vascular malformation patients each year and performing over 4,000 surgeries under general anesthesia, the team's findings have been cited by 13 international clinical guidelines and recognized with eight provincial and ministerial awards including the Shanghai Scientific and Technological Progress Award (First Prize). Its core research project ranked first among the "Top Ten Advances in Chinese Plastic Surgery."
