Professor Du Peng of Xinhua Hospital Named 2026 “Shanghai Medical Craftsman”
The Shanghai Medical Workers' Union has released the results of its 2026 “Shanghai Medical Craftsman” selection, and Professor Du Peng — vice president of Xinhua Hospital, director of the Comprehensive Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Center, and discipline leader in colorectal and anal surgery — has been named to the list. In more than two decades of practice, Du has focused on intestinal inflammation and tumors. He systematically reported that extraintestinal manifestations occur in 11.2% of Chinese patients with ulcerative colitis and that malignant colorectal stricture occurs in 14.2%, providing “Chinese evidence” for precise surgical decision-making.
He was the first in China to promote a modified surgical procedure for ulcerative colitis, reducing long-term postoperative complications from 41.5% to 28.1%, and created a novel “xiaolongbao” (soup dumpling) suturing technique for ileostomy, cutting stoma complications sharply from 35% to 10.3%. For microsatellite-stable advanced rectal cancer, his preoperative mFOLFOX6 chemotherapy combined with a PD-1 monoclonal antibody achieved a pathological complete response rate of 42.9%, earning a Best of ASCO abstract award at the 2026 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting.
